David, lets start our talk about the new changes of the new IELTS standand in August, what about the detail changes?
David Hathaway:There is very little detail changes apart from the changes in the band of scoring. Previously tilll today the band of scoring for the spoken english goes 2, 4, 6, 8. It was not easy for the examiner to assess the student. They have such a wide range. Now they would increase that by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, 8. So make that easier.
David Hathaway:Primarily this is already forth in UK, and not yet forth here in China until August. It was the idea to give the examiners, not the students. However it does let the students got more realistic score.
David Hathaway:This gives the students more scope, more flexibility get the 6, to get the 7. It gives them higher score. But part of the new changes along with the band of score is the pronounciation. This is the only real thinking behind it. The students pronounciation has to be slightly better, rather than in the past, pronounciation was not thought for that important. It really ......it were all the main changes. It was primarily as I said the band score. That has not ... the fact from the pronounciation.
David Hathaway:That are really all the changes that are in place. But no doubt they would made further changes. They were initially thinking, that has not been confirmed, that they would change it to be a computer-based examimation. That however, would be a long way. They have the technology
主持人:Like the IBT?
David Hathaway:Yes, exactly. IBT is very easy. You could tick the box. But there are so many technichal difficulties having it online. I think it has a long long way to go in IELTS.
So how could the candidates cope with the new situation in the ordinary exercises?
David Hathaway:I dont think they should make any difference, what so ever. If the Commitee hadnt said, they would not be aware of any changes. I dont think it would be wide publicized. There arent any changes, if you look website outside. If only youl look into the tactical sources, teacher resources, then youll find changes in our place.
The teachers should pay more attention to it.
David Hathaway:Yes. It is for the techers of ours, rather than the learners of ours.
I think, however, the new changes have already got its place before, the changes were played anyway. So hopefully it would make no difference to challenge teachers. Because they already teach pronounciation as part of their course. They should slightly pay more attention to it. But as Ive said, theyve already done, already put pronounciation as part of their courses. But maybe they should make sure their students be able to cope with the the way for native people speaking, the way you look.
The English accent, or the American or the Austrailian, is it important?
David Hathaway:If you listen to my voice, I have exemly strange accent. It is very different in English. Some people would think me somebody from the country as I dont speak as normal accent, as I speak very quickly. So I dont think having an accent being American, English or Australian would make a diffenrence. The examiners, for example, maybe from Australia, Newzealand, with all different accents. If you have American accent as a lot of students in China, certainly would make a difference if you have an American examiner with an American accent. It doesnt make any difference surely if it has not in the examination. The only thing that I should say is that you dont make the two, the American pronounciation, the British pronounciation pronounciation together.
So it wont affect their score?
David Hathaway:Not at all.
