last，latest

　　這兩個詞都是late的最高級。用作形容詞時，last 在意義上和latest有點相近，實際上，它們的涵義和使用場合是不一樣的。

　　Last指連續順序中的最后一個，一般譯作最后的，有時譯為上一次的或過去的。last的對語是first.例：

　　The last time I saw them was in Paris last year．

　　我最后一次看見他們是去年在巴黎。

　　The last letter of the alphabet is Z．

　　字母表的最后一個字母是Z.

　　I dont know whether you have received my last letter or not．

　　我不知道你是否已收到我上一封信。

　　Latest表示時間上的最近，一般譯作最近的、最新的或最晚的。latest的對語是earliest.例：

　　The latest news about the Mideast is the beginning of another round of peace-talks．

　　This is his latest novel；we hope it is not his last．

　　請注意，last year、last month、last week、last night都是時間狀語，它們的前面無需使用介詞，但last century卻是例外，我們必須說in the last century或 during the last century.介詞in和during不能省略。
