趣談 otherwise
otherwise 是個常用詞，也是一個多義詞。由于在不同的語境中， otherwise 的含義和用法有著很大的差異，以致不少學(xué)生在理解和使用它時經(jīng)常出錯。現(xiàn)將它的用法歸納如下，供大家學(xué)習(xí)時參考。
一 . otherwise 用作連詞，意思為否則；要不然，相當(dāng)于 or， or else 或 if not .例如：
We'll go early， otherwise we may not get a seat.
我們得早點(diǎn)去，要不然就沒有座位了。
Seize the chance， otherwise you will regret it.
抓住機(jī)會，要不然你會后悔的。
I was ill that day， otherwise I would have taken part in the sports meet.
那天我病了，否則我會去參加運(yùn)動會的。
We didn't know you were in trouble at that time， otherwise we would have given you a hand.
我們當(dāng)時不知道你遇到了困難，要不然我們會幫助你的。
二 . otherwise 用作副詞，具有下列意義：
1. 意為另外；別樣。相當(dāng)于 differently 或 in another way .例如：
He evidently thinks otherwise.
他顯然有不同的想法。
She is otherwise engaged.
她另外有事。
We were going to play football， but it was so hot that we decided to do otherwise.
我們原打算踢足球，可是天氣太熱，我們就決定去干別的事情了。
2. 意為在其他方面。相當(dāng)于 in other or different ways. 例如：
The rent is high， but otherwise the house is satisfactory.
房租是貴，可這房子在別的方面倒令人滿意。
He is noisy， but otherwise a nice boy.
他愛吵鬧，但在其他方面倒是個好孩子。
The article is long， but not otherwise blameworthy.
這篇文章就是長，其他倒沒什么不好。
3. 意為相反地；要不然；否則。相當(dāng)于 in the other way 或 on the contrary .例如：
He is guilty until proved otherwise.
在證明他無罪之前他是有罪的。
He reminded me of what I should otherwise have forgotten.
幸虧他提醒了我，要不然我就忘了。
I hate her and I won't pretend otherwise.
我討厭她，而且我不愿裝作喜歡她。
Otherwise he would still be working， because his heart and soul were still in the school room with his students.
否則他還會在教書，因?yàn)樗男娜匀辉谡n堂上，仍然與學(xué)生們在一起。
三 . otherwise 用作形容詞，具有以下意義：
1. 意為另外的；不那樣的；不同的。相當(dāng)于 not as supposed 或 in a different state .例如：
The truth is quite otherwise.
事實(shí)真相與此大相徑庭。
Our struggle can not be otherwise than victorious.
我們的斗爭一定會勝利的。
How can it be otherwise than fatal？
這怎么會不致命呢？
2. 意為其他方面的；其他性質(zhì)的。例如：
Some are wise， some are otherwise.
有些人聰明，有些人則不然。
His students in Chinese literature are also his otherwise teachers.
這些人在中國文學(xué)方面是他的學(xué)生，可在其他方面卻是他的老師。
四 . otherwise 組成的短語：
1. and otherwise 意為等等；及其他。例如：
In the kindergarten， the children learn singing， dancing， drawing and otherwise.
孩子們在幼兒園里學(xué)唱歌、跳舞、畫畫等等。
She helped me with advice and otherwise.
她用勸告等方式幫助我。
2. or otherwise 意為或相反；或其反面。例如：
Everybody has his merits or otherwise.
每個人都有自己的優(yōu)點(diǎn)和缺點(diǎn)。
He is not concerned with its accuracy or otherwise.
準(zhǔn)確與否他不考慮。
