A must用于表示推論、永久命令或禁令及意向時，在間接引語中保持不變。

　　1 表示推論：

　　She said，Im always running into him;he must live near here!

　　2 表示永久命令：

　　He said，This door must be kept locked.

　　B must用于表示責任時，在間接引語中可保持不變，但也可用would have to或 had to來轉述。

　　1 I/we must可用would have to來轉述would have to用于表示該責任取決于將來某事時或某事的完成看來很遙遠或不能肯定。也就是說，在這種情況下must顯然可用 will have to替代：

　　如已決定需要在某一時間完成某一動作，或已訂好某一計劃，或所承擔的某種義務可以較快地履行完畢，或至少在轉述為間接引語時已經完成了，則常用 had to表示某一必需去做的事：

　　He said，I must wash my hands.

　　他說：我得洗洗手。(他很可能后來馬上去洗手了。)相當于：

　　He said that he had to wash his hands.

　　他說他得去洗洗手。

　　Tom said，I must be there by nine tomorrow.

　　湯姆說：我明天9點以前必須在那里。相當于：

　　Tom said that he had to be there by nine the next day.

　　湯姆說第二天9點以前他必須在那里。

　　在這里也可以用would have to，但這樣就暗示必須做的事是
