Abraham Lincoln was born into poverty 200 years ago. At any other time and place, this lowly origin would have dictated his future, but in Lincoln’s case, his self-determination and force of will made it possible for him to secure his seat in his country's history. He has become a role model in the self-made America.

If you want to learn about somebody who didn’t quit, look no further. Abraham Lincoln had two business ventures failed, and the second one made him bankrupt, so he had to spend the next 17 years of his life paying for the debt. He also lost 8 different elections. It seemed that he had never done things right at the first time: the first time he ran for state legislature for Congress, for land officer, for Senate, all of these failed, and the first time he sought the vice-presidential nomination, he got less than 100 votes nationally. But he never found it too shameful to carry on his mission. Then later in 1860, on such a rough road, he made it to the White House. He lived up to his famous saying, “Always bear in mind that your own determination to success is more important than any other.”

He could have quit many times-—-but he didn’t and because he didn’t quit ,he became one of the greatest presidents in the history of America. One important way Lincoln influences present society is that we look back on his life as a role model for future generations. Lincoln’s high character influences us because we compare present-day politicians to the example Lincoln set. A major influence Lincoln has on the united States today is simply through the good example he set when it came to honesty, persistence and leadership.

  B篇

In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider making a web(網). The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times. On the seventh time he made it and went on to make his web. Bruce is said to have been encouraged by this and to have gone on to defeat the English. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often, he replied, “Failure? I have no failure. Now I know 50,000 ways it won’t work.”

?? So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?

?? Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.

?? The third thing to keep in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed.

? A. check out your goals to see if they are right for you

? B. think about failure as part of your life

? C. think about failure to find out what went wrong

? D. keep away from things that are beyond you

  53. Even if we have failed we should _____.

? A. learn to forget it?? B. learn to remember it

? C. learn to enjoy it?? D. learn to accept it

Students who date (約會)in middle school have significantly worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.

"Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence ,but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships," said Pamela Orpinas ,study author and professor in the College of Public Health and head of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior.

Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade.

Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires (調查表)about the students* academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.

"At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,'1 according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.

"Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker," Orpinas said, "when the couple break up. they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and divert (轉移)attention from studying.”

4tDating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school,”Orpinas concluded.

  A篇 Car Pollution

Some cars do not run the way they should. Bad smoke from a car can get into the air. This bad smoke is called pollution.

Pollution turns the air a gray(灰色的) color. It is very dirty. It is not good for people to breathe this dirty air.

To keep pollution down, the states tests cars every two years. This test checks to make sure the cars do not pollute the air. If a car does not pass the test, the owner cannot drive it the next year.

Some car owners drive their cars even though they cannot pass the test. It is also very bad for the air.

People want to find a way to get these cars off the road. So a state program(項目) was started that now seems to be helping. In this program the States buys cars that cannot pass the test or will help pay for repairs. This program has been helping people buy better cars or fix their old ones. It has also been helping to cut down on pollution.

To meet the needs for the program, a car must be drivable and the owner must meet certain income(收入) restrictions(限制). In order to get help from the program, a motorist must have a family income of no more than 185% of the national poverty guidelines(貧困線). For a family of four, that would be no more than $32,653 each year.

The state program that takes polluting cars off the road has just finished its first year, and people say it has been successful.

For the past year, the state program has been buying cars that can’t pass the test. Some car owners get as much as $1,000 for their old ones, while others receive as much as $500 for repairs.

The cars bought by the States through the program are put out of use and sent to dismantlers(拆卸廠).
